Project Overview & Description

The project I propose to do is to volunteer with the Cedar City Children's Musical Theater (CCCMT). This project will take place in two locations, the first will be a the CCCMT building and the second will be at the Heritage Theater, both located in Cedar City Utah. The project begins with a volunteer meeting on March 28, 2017 and will be completed by August 12, 2017; the exact performance dates have not yet been set. This project will include components such as child supervision, sewing and cleaning costumes, helping with set design, publicity, concessions and other opportunities on an as needed basis. I will complete this project as I work with the lead volunteers to provide a zone of proximal development for the children. I will be able to work on projects both at home and at the practices. Participation in this project will provide children in the community an opportunity to learn personal skills, develop talents, and contribute to the community. As I considered what I would like to do for my EDGE project I knew that I would like to do something in the community that would allow me to make a difference. I was drawn to the Cedar City Children’s Musical Theater specifically because of its work with children and their families. As I work with and for these children I will be able to take principles learned through education and integrate them into my own life. I will be able to learn first hand the challenges of working with large groups of children and develop strategies to minimize those challenges. I will develop patience and have more opportunities to gain empathy as I get to know and listen to the children that I work with. I will also have the opportunity to understand my weaknesses and will then be able to make plans to address those weaknesses. I will be personally challenged as I participate in publicity measures by going into the community to find sponsors and obtain contributions. Developing sewing and construction skills as I work on costumes and sets will contribute to my skill set and may allow for further service opportunities. Through my work I will be able to develop my abilities to reach out to others in relevant ways, give direction to my career goals, and provide an opportunity to develop family relationships. The ultimate goal of this project is to support children and their families in our community by providing a safe environment for children to develop socially, emotionally and consequently increase their self-esteem and their ability and desire to be contributing members of society.
